Student Totes Loaded Gun to Stratham School to Show 'Easy Access to Weapons'

SAU 16 in Exeter, N.H., says the student at Cooperative Middle School in Stratham had no ill intent after school lockdown. Police continue to investigate.

A student at a middle school in Stratham, N.H., brought a loaded gun to school April 29 because he "simply wanted to show a classmate that he had easy access to weapons," according to the superintendent of schools.

The Cooperative Middle School was put on lock-down when Principal Bill Furbush learned the gun was in the student's locker.

Mike Morgan, superintendent for SAU 16, said the student acknowledged he had the weapon in his locker and once it was located the school was put into a lock-down situation as Stratham police responded to the scene to determine if there were any threats.

"Upon investigation, it was determined that the the student had no ill intent whatsoever but simply wanted to show a classmate that he had easy access to weapons," Morgan emailed in a response to Patch. "The weapon was confiscated and is in police custody."

Morgan said the student's name will not be released and school officials will follow all appropriate disciplinary procedures.

Stratham police continue to investigate the case outside of school jurisdiction.
