Salem Deals with Third Major Water Main Break

Salem Police said the water main break snarled traffic for Monday's afternoon, evening commute.

A significant water main break occurred Monday morning on Route 28 in the area of 265 South Broadway, which prompted some lane closures in that vicinity.

Salem police issued its first alert around 2:30 a.m. In a 6 a.m. update, police reported that traffic for northbound and southbound traffic on Route 28 was being permitted in the southbound lanes.

Salem Police Officers are in the the vicinity directing motorists and it's anticipated that the water main break and repair will impact afternoon and evening traffic.

The Salem Department of Public Works has indicated this is a significant water main break between the traffic lights of Marshalls and Home Depot.

Salem Police, in its latest update:

"Please exercise patience during this time, as Salem DPW works to get the damaged pipe repaired and it is safe to open the road to the normal flow of traffic.
To our knowledge all businesses remain open at this time and all businesses will be accessible."

  • In an early morning alert, the Salem Police Department said the detours included:
  • Route 28 Southbound (South Broadway) is detoured at Cluff Crossing Road. From there, traffic will be detoured south on Kelly Road to Route 28.
  • Route 28 Northbound (South Broadway) is detoured at Pattee Road. From there, traffic will be detoured to Senter Street to Lawrence Road (northbound) to Cluff Road (westbound), which connects to Route 28.
