2. A LEGEND LOST: Red Sox fans received the sad news about the death of beloved team icon Johnny Pesky yesterday. He was 92 years old, and spent over 60 of those years wearing a Red Sox uniform in some capacity. No word on a possible tribute in Boston for the great no. 6.

Also dying at the age of 90 yesterday was former Cosmopolitan editor Helen Gurley Brown.

4. THIS DAY IN HISTORY: On this day in 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signs into law the Social Security Act. Press photographers snapped pictures as FDR, flanked by ranking members of Congress, signed into law the historic act, which guaranteed an income for the unemployed and retirees. FDR commended Congress for what he considered to be a "patriotic" act.

5. MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR TO RETIRE: After a brief non-public session, the Windham Board of Selectmen announced on Aug. 13 that Al Barlow, who has served as Maintenance Supervisor to the town for the past 14 years, is retiring this year.
