Two Heated Races, New School Warrant Headline Tuesday Election

Voters will choose whether to support a $31 million bond for a new school and fields.

Windham voters have faced no shortage of important elections in recent years, and this Tuesday the key figure to focus on will be $31 million.

That is the sum to fund a new seventh and eighth grade school and related fields on London Bridge Road. It will appear as Article 2 on the school ballot.

Also included in Article 2 is upgrades to Windham High School fields with a turf surface, lighting and seating.

Some proponents of the massive project such as the Windham Initiative for a New Schools (WINS) believe the project will alleviate overcrowding stresses in the district, most notably at Windham Middle School. They add that enrollment numbers are ever-increasing

Opponents, such as the Windham Taxpayers Coalition, note that interest payments will lift the cost to $51 million with no state aid for the project. The WTC also has noted that the project has been previously stated as something that will not solve all of the problems in the district.

The school ballot will also feature two candidates who have both chosen clear sides in the school debate.

Current Windham School Board Chairman Dr. Bruce Anderson has previously supported the bond article, while his opponent, Dennis Senibaldi, has been vocally against the new school.

The two have discussed their positions in public on sevearl occasions, including a Feb. 21 candidates night event hosted by the Windham Woman's Club.

While an Anderson loss on Tuesday would mean a new chairman for 2013 on the School Board, Windham voters already know there will be a new chairman on the Board of Selectmen.

Long-tenured Selectman Bruce Breton will step down this year due to health reasons. As of last week, Breton planned on attending his final meeting tonight before one of two candidates is elected to take his place.

Local businessman Al Letizio, Jr. announced his candidacy in the wake of Breton's decision to not seek another term.

Letizio has had a much friendlier race with his opponent: former Selectman Alan Carpenter.

The polls will open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Windham High School.
