Windham Wolverines Ready for 2012 Season

The program is gearing up for a successful year.

From Windham Wolverines Football and Cheer:

The Windham youth football and cheer program is gearing up for a new season. The teams will take to the field this Sunday with high hopes in their second year. Last season the 6th grade team won the Division II Championship, the fourth and fifth grade combined team was the runner-up in their Division II Championship game and the second and third grade combined team went undefeated.

“We’ve made some significant positive changes in 2012”, said Jim Williams. “Last year we had three football teams and four cheer squads. We now have five football teams and five cheer squads.” The Wolverines program has increased from 180 kids in 2011 to 240 football players and cheerleaders combined this year.  Williams continued, “I can’t believe how fast we’re growing—from players to cheerleaders to coaches and volunteers. We’re very fortunate to have an increased presence of high school coaches, players and cheerleaders who are mentoring our kids. The support from the community has been overwhelming.”

The five Wolverines football teams participated in a jamboree in Laconia last weekend. Each team played at least three 20 minute scrimmages.  Football Director and 7th grade coach Kyle McInnis said, “This is sort of a dry run for us. These scrimmages help the kids to get a good feel for the plays and their positions before the regular season.”  Windham faced teams from Laconia, Franklin, Hudson, Plymouth and Salem. “I’m really encouraged. Our boys played extremely well at all grade levels.” The Wolverines football program will consist of a second and third grade combined team, fourth grade team, fifth grade team, sixth grade team and seventh grade team.

Meanwhile, the five cheer squads, consisting of girls K-8th grade, have been doing a significant amount of preparation of their own. “Our girls have been practicing four days a week throughout the month of August”, said Kim Oliveira, Cheer Director.  “The older squads will have routines that include high level tumbling and stunts. Our younger teams have been really enthusiastic and are ready to put on great half-time shows. All of our girls can’t wait to get out there and show off their talent.”
