Cassedy Up for 2014 NH Teacher of the Year

A local high school educator faces some steep competition after receiving a prestigious honor.

Windham High School's Dean of Arts Jared Cassedy is among the 36 nominees for the 2014 New Hampshire Teacher of the Year award.

Cassedy is the only Windham nominee on the list, which also includes two from Salem.

The Windham High School Concert Band, which Cassedy directs, has received plenty of attention for recent success.

The Orchestra Hall at the Chicago Symphony Center was the backdrop of a major milestone for the band last week as the students took home top honors at a national festival.

At the WorldStrides Heritage Performance Festival of Gold, the group finished as the top scoring concert band out of a field of four. The victory came by a single point.

The New Hampshire Department of Education will announce the semifinalists in mid April, while the finalists will be selected in June and the winner will be announced in September, according to NHDOE's website.

A ceremony will take place next Monday in Concord to recognize all of the nominees.

Should Cassedy win, he would be the second Windham winner in the past three years. Bethany Bernasconi, a science teacher at Windham High School, was the 2012 New Hampshire Teacher of the Year.
