Weekend Snow Chances Increase For NJ, Forecasters Say

Up to 2 inches of snow could fall this weekend in New Jersey, and that will be followed by bitter cold, forecasters say.

Parts of the Garden State could see up to 2 inches of snow this weekend before another blast of bitterly cold air moves in, according to the latest forecast.

Thursday is another frigid day, with the chance of snow squalls in North Jersey, National Weather Service forecasters said.

As a series of Alberta clipper systems move through the area, Saturday night is expected to bring at least some snow to New Jersey.

"Because the coldest air may be delayed a bit near the Atlantic coast, it is not quite a sure bet for all snow along the I-95 corridor of the Northeast this weekend," AccuWeather Senior Storm Warning Meteorologist Eddie Walker said.

The greatest chances for snow will be in the Delaware Valley and Philadelphia area, National Weather Service forecasters said (see map below).

Snow will taper off Sunday morning with a bitter cold front crossing the state.

"There is a massive area of air in northwestern Canada where temperatures are 20 to 30 degrees below zero Fahrenheit, and it is on its way southeastward into the U.S.," AccuWeather Chief On-Air Meteorologist Bernie Rayno said. "This is the mother lode of cold air and is a term I don't use lightly."

Highs will only reach the upper-20s in the northwest corner of the state and mid-30s along the I-95 corridor and into South Jersey, National Weather Service forecasters said.

According to AccuWeather forecasters, temperatures will moderate in time for Christmas.
