24 More ‘Bad Businesses’ Caught Stiffing Employees, NJ Says

Now, 200 companies are listed on the state's WALL, or Workplace Accountability in Labor List. The latest additions owe a collective $2.1M.

NEW JERSEY — Two dozen businesses were added recently to the state list of employers who have failed to pay wages, benefits and taxes, according to the New Jersey Department of Labor.

In total, 201 businesses are listed on the state's WALL, or Workplace Accountability in Labor List — with officials saying they collectively owe $20.2 million to their employees, or to the state. All businesses on the list are prohibited from receiving public contracts.

The 24 newly-added companies, which include beauty salons, landscaping and construction companies, and a local cafe, owe about $2.1 million, according to the Department of Labor. These new additions were added to the list in August and September.

Records show many of these businesses were found to have violated workers' compensation law, temporary disability benefits law, or unemployment compensation law.

"All New Jersey businesses must comply with the law. When some businesses don’t, it’s more difficult for law-abiding businesses to compete," the NJ Department of Labor states on its website. "The WALL is a powerful tool established by law to hold businesses accountable for failing to satisfy their outstanding liabilities to the State."
