NEW JERSEY — Sixteen New Jersey counties are under a cold weather advisory Wednesday as frigid conditions linger, according to forecasters.

It was the coldest night of the stretch so far as temperatures in Walpack, Sussex County dropped to -17 degrees overnight, according to the Rutgers NJ Weather Network. That network is overseen by the state climatologist's office.

The cold weather advisory - in every county except for Bergen, Essex, Union, Hudson and Passaic - is in place until 12 p.m. Wednesday, the National Weather Service said. In these conditions, frostbite and hypothermia can occur in a matter of minutes.

As of Wednesday morning, temperatures statewide are in the single digits and teens at the highest.

The good news is that this bitter cold won't last too much longer, forecasters say. It won't be warm by any means, but we will climb out of single digits.

"After a bitterly cold start to Thursday, the cold conditions continue however not quite as harsh as previous days," National Weather Service forecasters said Wednesday morning. "The need for additional cold weather related hazards are not anticipated."

Temperatures Thursday will rise to still below average but near the freezing mark, with another cold night in store.

Over the weekend, temperatures will continue to climb into the 30s and possibly 40s. Lows overnight Saturday will be in the teens and 20s.
