Assault Rifle, Armor Piercing Ammo Found In NJ, 2 Teens Charged

A 911 call reporting shots fired prompted the police investigation on Saturday night.

GREENWICH TOWNSHIP, NJ — A 14-year-old and a 17-year-old were charged after police say they found an assault rifle and armor-piercing ammunition on Saturday night, according to the Warren County Prosecutor's Office.

On Saturday at around 10:45 p.m., a 911 caller reported hearing shots fired in the area of Sumot Drive and Hamilton Road in Greenwich Township.

Greenwich Township Police Officers did not find anyone injured or damaged property but did find an assault rifle, armor-piercing ammunition, and a large capacity magazine in the area, according to authorities.

One person fled the scene, and two juveniles from Northampton County, PA were each charged.

The 14-year-old was charged with second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, specifically an assault rifle; second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, specifically discharging an assault rifle in a residential area; fourth-degree possession of prohibited weapons and devices, specifically armor-piercing ammunition; and fourth-degree possession of a large capacity magazine.

The 17-year-old was charged with second-degree conspiracy/unlawful possession of a weapon, specifically an assault rifle; second-degree conspiracy/unlawful possession of a weapon or an unlawful purpose, specifically discharging an assault rifle in a residential area; fourth-degree conspiracy/possession of prohibited weapons and devices, specifically armor-piercing ammunition; and fourth-degree conspiracy/possession of a large capacity magazine.

The teens are awaiting a preliminary hearing before a family court judge.

The Warren County Prosecutor's Office and Philipsburg Police K-9 Unit helped the Greenwich Township Police with the investigation.
