2 Patient Deaths Tied To Deadly Bacteria Found In NJ Hospital's Water

Two people have died at a North Jersey hospital after being infected with a deadly bacteria that was traced to the hospital's water system, according to a report.

One patient died in July, NJ.com reported, while the second one died more recently, NJ.com reported. Both tested positive for Legionella, which can cause a serious form of pneumonia, and both were treated at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Paterson, the report said.

The hospital issued warnings to patients and visitors in mid-December after the state Department of Health notified the hospital Dec. 8 that its water system had tested positive for the bacteria, the report said. More than 220 former patients treated from Nov. 27 to Dec. 8 were being warned of possible risks, the report said, but no other patients have tested positive.
