First ANCHOR Benefit Payments Arriving Early: What To Know

After originally saying the payments would be issued in November, Treasury officials confirmed benefits will begin arriving in mid-October.

NEW JERSEY — Property tax benefits will be arriving soon for the 1.5 million New Jersey residents who were automatically enrolled in the state's ANCHOR program this year.

The state Division of Taxation told Patch that the first round of payments began processing on Oct. 1, so checks and direct deposits will make their way to residents' homes and bank accounts around the middle of the month.

Other homeowners and renters will also get their payments on a rolling basis, about 90 days after they submit their application. The state anticipates 2 million people will get a benefit this year, with payments ranging between $450 and $1,750.

The Division of Taxation has updated its website so people can check if the state received their information, and also look up their benefit status. Some applicants have had some trouble accessing the ANCHOR status page this year, and state officials recommend that residents use a desktop computer to check their status, and make sure they do not have multiple sessions open in another browser.

The deadline to submit a new application for the ANCHOR (Affordable New Jersey Communities for Homeowners and Renters) program is on Nov. 30, Just like last year, homeowners can receive up to a $1,500 refund and renters can get up to $450 — with eligible seniors 65 and older getting an extra $250.

A number of communities around the state also have free sessions scheduled for any resident who may need some help getting their ANCHOR application filed.

Eligibility and payments for this year's ANCHOR program are based on your 2021 residency, income, and age. For that year, homeowners must have had an annual gross income of $250,000 or less, and renters must have had an annual income of $150,000 or less to be eligible.
