Memorial Day Weather Update For NJ: Prepare For Strong Thunderstorms

NEW JERSEY — Enjoy the sunshine on Sunday in New Jersey, because the possibility of storms has increased significantly for Memorial Day, according to the National Weather Service.

In an update Saturday evening, the weather service said there is a potential for widespread severe weather on Monday, with flooding possible as well.

A warm, increasingly humid air mass over eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey will collide with a cold front that is anticipated to move into the area on Monday, forecasters said. Thunderstorms will be possible in the morning Monday and increase throughout the afternoon, getting stronger and having the potential for hail and heavy rain.

North Jersey

Sunday: Patchy fog before 8 a.m. A slight chance of showers, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Otherwise, partly sunny, with a high near 82. South wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent.

Sunday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 2 a.m. Patchy fog after 2 a.m. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 62. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 40 percent.

Memorial Day: A chance of showers before 11 a.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 2 p.m. Patchy fog before 8 a.m. High near 72. Southeast wind 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New rainfall amounts between a half and three-quarters of an inch possible.

Monday Night: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 2 a.m., then a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 a.m. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Low around 63. Southeast wind 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New rainfall amounts between three-quarters and 1 inch possible.

Central Jersey

Sunday: Partly sunny, with a high near 84. Southeast wind 5 to 10 mph.

Sunday Night: A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms, then a chance of showers after 2 a.m. Areas of fog after 2 a.m. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 63. Southeast wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40 percent.

Memorial Day: Areas of fog before 8 a.m. A chance of showers before 8 a.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 2 p.m. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Otherwise, cloudy, with a high near 77. Southeast wind 5 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Monday Night: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm, mainly before 2 a.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 a.m. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Low around 65. South Jersey
