NORFOLK, VA — A New Jersey man is recovering after he was shot multiple times in a shooting at a college campus in Norfolk, Virginia, according to authorities and a report.

The family of Justin Marshall confirmed he was one of two 22-year-old men shot at Norfolk State University on April 19th, according to a statement obtained by WTKR. His family also said Marshall is a senior from Deptford studying to be a physician assistant.

A GoFundMe established for Marshall and his family said Marshall was shot five times and remains hospitalized as he recovers. As of Thursday, the campaign had raised more than $24,000.

"He wasn’t in the wrong place. He wasn’t doing anything reckless," GoFundMe organizer Amber Gonzalez said. "Justin is a scholar, a leader, and a future physician assistant who was just one class away from earning his bachelor's degree. He was supposed to graduate this fall."

The shooting happened around 11:30 p.m. in the 2200 block of Presidential Parkway on the Norfolk State campus, according to Norfolk police. Authorities said when officers arrived at the scene, they found two men suffering from gunshot wounds.

Both men were taken to the hospital for treatment following the shooting, police said.

Authorities later charged Zakeyis A. Womack, 20, of Ringgold, Virginia, in connection with the shooting. Womack was charged with two counts each of malicious wounding, use of a firearm and shooting in the commission of a felony.

Police arrested Womack in North Carolina. He is currently being held without bond.

Womack was also charged in connection with a drive-by shooting in Danville, Virginia, in October 2023, according to police.

In a statement sent to WTKR, Marshall's family thanked friends, family and the Deptford community for their support.

"In the wake of an unimaginable moment in our lives, and while sanity is still with us, our family would like to express our deepest gratitude to everyone for your text messages, phone calls, food donations, monetary donations, flowers, visits, and PRAYERS!!" Marshall's family said. "Please don’t stop praying—those prayers are the ONLY THING keeping us going."
