Dem. Race Called For Biden, Trump Wins Uncontested: See NJ Voter Turnout For Primaries

While Donald Trump and Joe Biden are the presumptive Republican and Democratic nominees, respectively, some voters had other options.

NEW JERSEY — Voters in New Jersey turned out Tuesday to cast their ballots for local, county, and federal races, with a repeat of the 2020 presidential race between Donald Trump and current president Joe Biden looking likely this November.

Polls closed at 8 p.m. across the Garden State for the 2024 primary election, and the Associated Press had called the Democratic primary for Biden by 8:05 p.m.

Former president Trump ran unopposed on the Republican ballot, while the Democratic ballot included Biden, anti-abortion activist Terrisa Bukovinac, and an "Uncommitted" option (in most counties) which was meant to serve as a protest of Biden's response to Israel's ongoing war in Gaza.

The presidential primary in the Garden State is largely a formality, as Trump and Biden had unofficially sealed their parties' nominations by March.

And while Trump and Biden are the presumptive Republican and Democratic nominees, respectively, the New Jersey results will allow them both to pick up more delegates ahead of both parties' national conventions.

New Jersey has 126 pledged Democratic delegates, which are allocated according to the Democratic National Committee's rules. Candidates must receive at least 15 percent of the vote to qualify for any statewide delegates, and 15 percent of the vote in one of the state's 20 delegate districts to qualify for delegates in that district.

After the Republican National Committee cut New Jersey's count, there are 12 delegates at stake in the GOP presidential primary. All delegates will be awarded to the winner of the statewide vote.

Tuesday marks the first primary elections since a jury convicted Trump of all 34 counts in a criminal hush money trial. Presidential primaries were also held Tuesday in Washington, D.C., Montana, New Mexico and South Dakota.
