Canadian Wildfire Smoke Could Cause Hazy Conditions In NJ

In 2023, wildfire smoke from Canada led to a "code orange" air quality alert around our region.

NEW JERSEY - After a wet and chilly May, temperatures will warm up this week with highs in the low 90s predicted. There is also the threat of haze in the atmosphere due to smoke from Canadian wildfires.

Canadian wildfires are sending clouds of haze throughout the northeastern United States, and may linger around until next week.

According to the National Weather Service, the air quality will not be impacted around New Jersey, and the smoke will stay aloft.

In 2023, wildfire smoke from Canada led to a “code orange” air quality alert around our region. This designation correlates to potentially unhealthy conditions for “sensitive” groups.

This category includes children and teenagers, older adults, people with asthma, and those with heart or lung conditions. It also extends to those who work, or rigorously exercise outside.

According to the AP, more than 25,000 Canadian residents in three provinces have been evacuated, and dozens of wildfires remained active as of Sunday.
