NJ Weather: Severe Thunderstorms On The Way, Forecasters Say

Flooding and fierce storms are possible through the weekend in parts of NJ. Here's what - and when - to expect.

NEW JERSEY — Flooding and severe storms are possible through the weekend in parts of New Jersey as more wet weather is expected throughout the state, forecasters say.

Though Thursday is expected to be sunny with a high around 85 in the Garden State, storm clouds are slated to roll in by Thursday overnight into Friday, according to the latest forecast from the National Weather Service. Showers will likely take place though the morning Friday, with thunderstorms set to begin early Friday afternoon and linger through Saturday.

Showers and thunderstorms - some strong to severe - are in store Friday, the weather service said, with gusty winds and small hail also possible.

New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, are possible in North Jersey (except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms), while between a quarter and half of an inch are possible in South Jersey on Friday, forecasters said.

The storm will likely stall out over the Northeast from Friday into Saturday, added AccuWeather.com, leading to additional rounds of showers and perhaps gusty thunderstorms.

The risk of severe storms should be lower Saturday, said forecasters. Still, AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Brett Anderson said that Saturday's weather is "certainly not the type" for going to the beach or hanging out at the pool, unless you catch a rain-free hour here and there.

"At least the gardens, lawns and crops in the fields will appreciate the moisture," Anderson said.

As of Thursday morning, a hazardous weather outlook is in effect for nine New Jersey counties due to potential minor coastal flooding through Saturday. The affected counties are:

  • Middlesex
  • Monmouth
  • Ocean
  • Burlington
  • Cape May
  • Salem
  • Gloucester
  • Cumberland
  • Camden

The storm clouds should finally clear by Saturday evening before 8 p.m., the National Weather Service said, just in time for a sunny Sunday on Father's Day, with highs near 83.
