NEW JERSEY — A swath of wet weather is expected Friday before a sunny weekend in the Garden State, forecasters said, with severe thunderstorms, fierce winds and flash flooding all in the cards.

There’s a risk of a flash flooding threat across the Garden State on Friday as several rounds of storms are projected to hit the region from Friday morning into the evening, said forecasters with Accuweather and the National Weather Service.

"Even moderate amounts of rainfall could renew flooding problems on area streams," said Accuweather in their rain outlook for Northeastern states.

Wind gusts of 60 miles per hour were already reported Friday morning during severe thunderstorms moving from Bass River State Forest to Ventnor City, according to the National Weather Service. A severe thunderstorm watch was in effect for Atlantic, Burlington, Cape May, Cumberland, and Ocean counties earlier Friday morning, but has expired.

This afternoon, a cold front will "touch off another round of showers and thunderstorms, mainly over New Jersey with gusty winds and heavy rain," added the NWS.

Accuweather added that the risk of rain triggering flash flooding on Friday "will extend from eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey through eastern New York and northwestern New England."
