NEW JERSEY — Ten New Jersey counties are now under a tornado watch until 11 p.m. as severe weather is expected Monday afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service.

The counties affected are: Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, Hunterdon, Mercer, Salem, and Warren, the NWS said.

"Widespread gusts" of wind up to 75 miles per hour and isolated hail up to the size of a ping-pong ball are both possible, added the NWS.

Monday is slated to kick off several rounds of wet weather in the Garden State this week, as severe thunderstorms bring the possibility of heavy rain and flash flooding, as well as a possible tornado.

The most severe storms are expected between 4 and 10 p.m., and will move from west to east, the National Weather Service said.

Numerous severe storms are possible in the western half of the Garden State, while the eastern region is at a lowered risk for scattered severe storms, the NWS said.

“The primary threat will be damaging winds with a couple tornadoes possible. Flash flooding remains a threat as well,” the National Weather Service's Mount Holly station said in a statement. “Please ensure you have multiple ways to receive warnings and remain weather aware on Monday.”

As of 7 a.m., all 21 counties are under a hazardous weather outlook through Monday night.

A "washout" in parts of the northeast is expected, AccuWeather reports, with hydroplaning and downed tree limbs possible on roadways. Motorists are advised to plan extra time into Monday's commute.

“Multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms through early Tuesday may result in isolated to scattered flash flooding if heaviest rainfall moves across the same area,” the National Weather Service said in the outlook alert.

Wet weather is expected to continue Tuesday with showers and thunderstorms, damaging winds and heavy rain. Wednesday will serve as a welcome break with temperatures around 85 degrees and sunny before Thursday brings another chance of showers in the evening.
