NJ Weather: Thunderstorms In Father’s Day Weekend Forecast

Damaging winds, power outages and quarter-sized hail are all possible as another round of storms are set to hit NJ Friday.

NEW JERSEY - Severe weather, including damaging winds, power outages and quarter-sized hail, are possible in the Garden State as storms begin to roll into the region for Father’s Day weekend, forecasters say.

Showers are set to be ushered into the state Friday morning by 11 a.m., with the possibility of thunderstorms to begin after 2 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. The primary threat of severe weather will be between 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.

“Stay alert for potential tree damage, powerline issues & large hail,” the National Weather Service Mount Holly station said in a statement via Twitter Friday morning.

South Jersey is expected to see the most effects of the Friday storms, with short-lived and/or non-widespread isolated intense storms possible south of I-95. No severe storms are expected north of Somerset and Mercer counties, though rain is still expected.

Up to an inch of rainfall is expected in South Jersey, while between a quarter and half of an inch of accumulation is possible in North Jersey on Friday. More accumulation rainfall is expected Friday night and Saturday.

On Saturday, the likelihood for thunderstorms will return after 8 a.m. in North Jersey, though the afternoon should see partly sunny skies, according to the National Weather Service. There will be a slight chance of showers throughout the day in the southern part of the state.

As of Friday morning, a hazardous weather outlook is in effect for nine New Jersey counties due to potential minor coastal flooding through Sunday and scattered severe thunderstorms. The affected counties are:

  • Middlesex
  • Monmouth
  • Ocean
  • Burlington
  • Cape May
  • Salem
  • Gloucester
  • Cumberland
  • Camden

Father's Day is expected to see a slight chance of showers Sunday in North Jersey and sunny skies in South Jersey with highs in the high 70s and low 80s, forecasters said.

North Jersey:

Friday: A slight chance of showers before 11 a.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 2 p.m. Some of the storms could produce small hail and gusty winds. High near 79. Calm wind becoming southwest 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Friday Night: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 11 p.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., then a slight chance of showers after 5 a.m. Patchy fog after 11 p.m. Low around 59. Calm wind becoming north around 5 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Saturday: A slight chance of showers, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 8 a.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 74. Northwest wind 8 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Saturday Night: A 20 percent chance of showers before 2 a.m. Partly cloudy, with a low around 58. Northwest wind 7 to 11 mph.

Sunday: A 20 percent chance of showers after 2 p.m. Mostly sunny, with a high near 79. Northwest wind around 9 mph.

Sunday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 59.

South Jersey:

Friday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 2 p.m. Some storms could be severe, with large hail and damaging winds. High near 80. South wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.

Friday Night: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 1am. Patchy fog before 4 a.m., then patchy fog after 5 a.m. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 60. Southeast wind around 5 mph becoming northwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Saturday: A slight chance of showers between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., then a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 81. Northwest wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent.

Saturday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 56. Northwest wind around 5 mph.

Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 83. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph.

Sunday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 57.
