Severe Storm Warnings Issued As Dangerous Heat Cooks NJ

It'll feel like between 100 and 107 degrees Friday and later this afternoon and evening, the chance of severe storms increases.

Severe Thunderstorm Warnings are being issued in parts of New Jersey as storms move in on a dangerously hot and humid day.

A warning is in place until 3:15 p.m. in northwestern Morris, southwestern Sussex and northeastern Warren counties, according to the National Weather Service. Storms could have 60 mph winds; residents in these areas are urged to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect until 9 p.m. in every county except for Cape May County. Isolated hail up to a quarter size and winds up to 70 mph are possible, the National Weather Service said.

Heat and humidity will build throughout the day, according to the National Weather Service. An Extreme Heat Warning and Heat Advisory are in place for the entire state until 9 p.m. (see map below).

Isolated to scattered severe thunderstorms are possible between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m.

The main threat with these storms is locally damaging winds, but small hail is possible, forecasters say. Localize flash flooding can also occur due to heavy rain.

"The showers and thunderstorms will develop northwest to southeast which puts areas near and northwest of the I-95 corridor in the greater potential for severe weather," the National Weather Service said.

Storms will dwindle as the sun sets. Additional chances of showers and thunderstorms are possible over the weekend, particularly Sunday, forecasters said. Sunday's storms could be severe and bring flash flooding.
