Severe Weather Warnings Issued For Parts Of NJ, Flood Watch For All

Rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches are possible Thursday, forecasters say, with localized amounts in excess of 6 inches.

All 21 New Jersey counties will be under a Flood Watch Thursday as severe storms will drench the state and widespread flash flooding is expected, according to the latest forecast.

Wednesday will be another incredibly hot and humid day for the Garden State, with temperatures feeling like up to 105 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Most of the state remains under a Heat Advisory until 8 p.m.

Then, from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m., isolated severe thunderstorms are possible in North Jersey, forecasters said.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is in place until 5:30 p.m. in southwestern Sussex and northeastern Warren counties.

With Wednesday's storms, AccuWeather forecasters predict damaging wind gusts between 55 and 65 mph, along with possible flash flooding.

Storms and showers will become widespread Thursday afternoon into the evening, according to the National Weather Service.

Rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches are possible, National Weather Service forecasters said, with 6 inches or more possible in some areas. Forecasters anticipate widespread flash flooding.

“Ingredients will come together on Thursday that will lead to a flash flood threat, especially for areas across eastern Pennsylvania into New Jersey. Two to four inches of rainfall is forecast across the region, with rainfall rates that can exceed one inch per hour,” AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Scott Homan said.

A Flood Watch was issued for Thursday afternoon through late Thursday night statewide. Flash flood warnings could occur, and the National Weather Service urges residents to have a way to receive any potential warnings.

As the evening goes on, storms will begin to subside.

"The heaviest of the showers and thunderstorms will begin to taper off after midnight from west to east, but lingering showers and thunderstorms will be possible," the National Weather Service said. "Any extensive flooding that does develop may not subside until sometime Friday."

Thursday won't be as hot as the days prior, though humidity will still be strong.

The silver lining is that this will usher in a cooler period. Friday will be breezy with some showers and drizzles. Highs will be in the low-to-mid 70s, according to the National Weather Service. Then, dry air will move in.

"The hot, humid, and stormy weather will fortunately by followed by very pleasant and dry conditions over the weekend and into early next week," National Weather Service forecasters said.
