Snow, Ice Arrive As Christmas Eve Storm Hits NJ: See Latest Forecast

There have been dozens of delays and several cancellations at Newark Liberty International Airport Tuesday morning, with snow continuing.

Forecasters predict that much of the state will see less than 1 inch of snow, but warned that untreated surfaces will quickly become icy as people travel for the holidays. At 9 a.m. Tuesday, temperatures were still hovering in the low 20s in much of NJ.

NEW JERSEY — Snow and rain are moving through New Jersey on this Christmas Eve morning, creating slippery conditions for travelers, and forecasters say precipitation will last until the early afternoon.

Forecasters predict that much of the state will see less than 1 inch of snow with this storm, but warned that untreated surfaces will quickly become icy as people travel for the holidays.

As of 9 a.m. Tuesday, temperatures were still hovering in the low 20s across most of the state, and are expected to rise into the 30s by the afternoon.

"While accumulations will be light, cold road surfaces may quickly result in very slippery conditions after the snow begins to accumulate," the National Weather Service said. "Anyone with travel plans should use extra caution and allow extra time."

Winter weather advisories are in place until 1 p.m. for the following counties, as ice may form: Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cumberland, Gloucester, Ocean, and Salem.

The rest of the state is under a special weather statement until 10 a.m. for minor snow accumulation and some freezing rain, as bands of precipitation cross the state. The storm system is likely to mix with some rain before moving out of the area by 1 p.m., said forecasters.

AccuWeather says New Jersey still has a low chance of a White Christmas, as temperatures will warm enough for most snowfall to melt.

Still, travelers should "brace for delays and hazardous conditions" if they are headed to their destination by car or plane, the private weather service said.

There have been 50 flight delays at Newark Liberty International Airport as of 9:10 a.m. Tuesday and six planes cancelled, according to FlightAware. You may also see current highway conditions in New Jersey here.
