Snowy, Icy, Rainy Day Ahead For NJ As Winter Storm Hits State: Latest Timing

Gov. Phil Murphy declared a State of Emergency and many school districts have delayed openings or are closed Tuesday.

A messy, slippery Tuesday is in store for New Jersey as many areas get their first accumulating snowfall of the year, while others will see a mixture of ice and rain, according to the latest forecast.

While the precipitation came later than forecasters predicted, it did become more widespread as of daybreak, according to the National Weather Service.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Sussex, Warren, Morris, Hunterdon, Somerset and western Passaic counties. These counties - minus Somerset, which the National Weather Service added after the others - are targeted by Gov. Phil Murphy's State of Emergency.

"These are the areas most likely to experience a troublesome Tuesday morning commute," National Weather Service forecasters said, as they are forecast to get 1 to 3 inches of snow, plus a light glaze of ice from freezing rain.

"For the remainder of the region that will see all rain or a change to rain early on will have a good soaking all-day type of rain," the National Weather Service said.

Late Tuesday evening is when the storm moves out, and things will dry up. However, slushy snow can melt and create black ice especially in North Jersey, so conditions still will not be great.

A cold and clear rest of the week is ahead, forecasters say. Wintry precipitation is again possible this weekend thanks to a shift in the polar vortex. Read more: Polar Vortex To Usher In Parade Of Winter Storms To NJ
