Thanksgiving Grocery, Black Friday Retail Hours: What’s Open, Closed In NJ

Most retail stores in New Jersey are closed on Thanksgiving Day, subduing the midnight madness rush to stores that started early in the 21st century but were abandoned during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thanksgiving Day shopping never fully returned due to shifts in consumer behavior and demands from retail employees and the public to make Thanksgiving a day off for all.

One retailer, the outdoor outfitter REI, is closed both Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday. REI, which has stores in 44 states, including New Jersey, has treated Black Friday as a paid holiday since 2015 as part of its #OptOutside tradition.

Stores Open Thanksgiving Day
Some grocery stores and pharmacies in New Jersey will be open on Thanksgiving, at least for limited hours. Here are some of them (check for local variations in hours):

Amazon Fresh: 7 a.m. to 5 p.m
Bass Pro Shops: Open at 8 a.m.
Cub Food: Most stores open but close by 4 p.m.
CVS: 24-hour locations are open; others may have limited hours
Dollar General: Open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Dollar Tree: 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Family Dollar: Hours vary by location
Save A Lot: Modified hours vary by location
ShopRite: Hours vary by location
Sprouts Farmers Market: 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Stop & Shop: Open regular hours, which vary by location
Walgreens: 500 24-hour locations and 300 pharmacies open
Wawa: Most stores open regular hours
Whole Foods: Most stores open 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.; some stores may close an hour late at 10 p.m. on Nov. 25-26
Wegmans: Stores will remain open until 4 p.m.

These stores will be closed on Thanksgiving, but will reopen on Black Friday, some as early as 5 a.m.
