These 10 NJ Companies Are Among America’s Best Employers

The Forbes report is based on a survey of more than 160,000 employees. NJ Transit and several health systems were among the state's top 10.

NEW JERSEY — TD Bank, Merck, and Johnson & Johnson are the best employers with headquarters in New Jersey, according to a new ranking from Forbes.

The Forbes report, America’s Best Employers By State, is based on a survey of more than 160,000 employees of companies with at least 500 people working in U.S. operations.

The survey, conducted by the market research firm Statista, asked participants how likely they were on a scale of zero to 10 to recommend their employer as a good place to work. Respondents were also asked to evaluate employers they’d worked for within the past two years, and organizations they knew within their industry or through friends or family who worked there.

By those measures, the top 10 employers with headquarters in New Jersey are:

  1. TD Bank, a banking and financial services company based in Cherry Hill with 103,257 employees; Bharat Masrani is the CEO of the company, which was founded in 1855.
  2. Merck and Co., a drugs and biotechnology company based in Rahway with 29,000 employees; Robert M. Davis is the CEO of the company, which was founded in 1891.
  3. Johnson & Johnson, a drugs and biotechnology company based in New Brunswick with 48,115 employees; Joaquin Duato is the CEO of the company, which was founded in YEAR.
  4. Rutgers University, based in New Brunswick with 23,600 employees; Jonathan Holloway is the CEO of the company, which was founded in 1766.
  5. Weichert Realtors, a business services and supplies company based in Morris Plains; Jim Weichert is the CEO of the company, which was founded in 1969 (employee data was not listed).
  6. Atlantic Health System, a healthcare and social services organization based in Morristown with 18,000 employees; Brian Gragnolati is the CEO of the company, which was founded in 1995.
  7. Selective Insurance, based in Branchville with 2,650 employees; John J. Marchioni is the CEO of the company, which was founded in 1926.
  8. Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, an insurance company based in Newark with 5,000 employees; Gary D. St. Hilaire is the CEO of the company, which was founded in 1932.
  9. BAYADA Home Health Care, a healthcare and social services organization based in Pennsauken with 31,500 employees; David Baiada is the CEO of the company, which was founded in 1975.
  10. New Jersey Transit, based in Newark with 11,000 employees; Kevin S. Corbett is the CEO of the company, which was founded in 1979.

Workers from all 50 states and the District of Columbia answered the most recent survey. Those findings were supplemented with data from the previous three surveys. In all, 1,294 organizations made the final cut.

Those in the final list are performing well with workers for their employee retention efforts, according to Forbes.

“When employees are in their roles for longer, leaders need to consider how they can ensure that they are providing challenges and development opportunities for that member of the staff to keep them engaged, satisfied, and productive,” Becky Wallace, head of people at LearnUpon, a corporate learning platform, told Forbes.

The report found that fewer than 50 percent of workers think their employer invests in the skills they need to advance.
