Thunderstorms, Heavy Rains Target NJ: See Latest Forecast

NEW JERSEY - A few thunderstorms bringing heavy downpours and gusty winds are slated to hit the Garden State Wednesday, forecasters said.

Showers are “likely this afternoon and evening across the northern half of the region with a few thunderstorms possible,” the National Weather Service said.

While brief downpours and gusts around 10 mph are possible, severe weather isn’t expected as the mercury hits the mid-to upper 70s Wednesday.

In fact, mid-week temperatures will hit 5 to 15 degrees below historical averages, AccuWeather said, with highs in the 70s and low humidity.

Showers are expected to linger through Thursday, paring with daytime temperatures in the low-mid 70s (“which will make for a very comfortable, if not slightly cool for late May, day,” the weather service said).

Dry skies are set to return by Friday and the weekend, with the next opportunity for storms as early as Sunday into early next week, the weather service said.

North Jersey

Wednesday: A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. Mostly sunny, with a high near 74. Light northwest wind.

Wednesday Night: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 52. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Thursday: A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 70. North wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent.

Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 49. Light north wind.

Friday: Sunny, with a high near 72. North wind 5 to 7 mph.

Friday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 50.

Central Jersey

Wednesday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 3 p.m. Mostly sunny, with a high near 78. West wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Wednesday Night: Showers and thunderstorms likely before 5 a.m., then a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 56. Southwest wind around 5 mph becoming northwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
