Woman Stabbed In Unprovoked Attack In Asbury Park Monday, Police Say
A woman was stabbed by a man she did not know on Monday afternoon, Labor Day, in Asbury Park. He approached her from behind, said police:

ASBURY PARK, NJ — A woman was stabbed by a man she did not know on Monday, Labor Day, in Asbury Park, Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond Santiago said Wednesday.
A local Asbury Park man has been arrested and charged in what police are calling an unprovoked attack.
The woman, a resident of Asbury Park, remains in critical condition.

At 2:37 Monday afternoon, Asbury Park Police responded to the 500 block of Asbury Avenue for a report of a stabbing. This is a residential neighborhood, near Trinity Episcopal Church, and only a few blocks from the bustling Asbury Park boardwalk.
The woman, who lives in Asbury Park, was walking with a friend. Police say a man approached the woman from behind and began to stab her, continuing to stab her until the friend intervened and pulled the woman to safety.

The woman and her attacker did not know each other. The attack was unprovoked, said a spokesman for the county prosecutor.
When officers arrived, several bystanders were giving aid to the woman. She suffered multiple stab wounds and was rushed to a local hospital, where she remains in critical condition.
Travis A. Cavanaugh, 39, of Asbury Park was detained at the scene and arrested. He is charged with first-degree attempted murder and two counts of weapons possession.
