Presentation On 1856 Shipwreck Slated For Feb. 24 By The New Jersey Maritime Museum

Well-known diver Bart Malone will discuss and display the finds from the wreck.

The immigrant ship Josephine Willis went down on Feb. 3, 1856, after she was struck by the SS Mangerton, more than 150 years ago

Now you can see photos of the artifacts recovered by diver Bart Malone and other Englishmen back in 2013. Malone will be on hand at Buckalew's Restaurant on North Bay Avenue in Beach Haven on Feb. 24. The presentation is slated to start at 7 p.m. A free, complimentary buffet will be provided at 6 p.m.

"The photographs and images of the china and other items recovered by several Englishmen and himself in 2013 are phenomenal," she said. "The Josephine Willis was laden with valuable cargo and steerage passengers headed from St. Katherine's Dock to Auckland, New Zealand. Do not miss out on this interesting program!"

The Josephine Willis departed London in February of 1856, laden with china and crockery, headed to New Zealand. But a lookout mistook the iron-clad Mangerton for a light and the steamer sliced the Willis down to the waterline, according to an account in https://www.transcollectorsclu....
