Expect Police Prescence At All Bernards Township Schools For First Day

Bernards Township students will have their first day back to school on Thursday.

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — Thousands of students, teachers, and staff will return to classrooms and schools across Bernards Township on Thursday after summer vacation.

Last week, the nation faced the tragedy of two children being killed and 17 others injured on Aug. 27 when a gunman opened fire during an all-school Mass at Annunciation Catholic School in south Minneapolis.

Following that event, Bernards Township Police Chief Timothy King told Patch that while the police department is taking precautions, it is the same protocols they implement at the beginning of every school year.

"As the school year begins, and following the tragic events in Minneapolis, we will have our SLEO III Officers stationed in every township school and will have a patrol presence around our schools and surrounding neighborhoods," said King.

In addition to our public schools, the police department will have a presence at their faith-based schools to ensure all students and staff feel safe.

"This step is being taken out of an abundance of caution to reassure our students, staff, and families that their safety remains a top priority. While there are no known specific threats to our community at this time, we believe this visible presence helps foster a safe learning environment and provides peace of mind," said King. "Our Officers are committed to maintaining strong partnerships with our schools and being a supportive, protective presence for our children."
