Mural Unveiled: Reflection Of School Community In Basking Ridge

Mount Prospect School held an unveiling ceremony on Friday to celebrate its 25-year anniversary.

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — A newly painted school mural created through the collaboration of students, staff, and local artist Caren Olmsted was recently unveiled at Mount Prospect School.

"Our new mural is so much more than a beautiful piece of art — it’s a reflection of who we are as a school community. It celebrates our diversity, our creativity, and our growth together as a garden of learners for 25 years," said Mount Prospect School Principal Dr. Joanne Hozeny.

To celebrate the school's milestones, Hozney said a project is done to represent who they are. A project was done at the 10 year, 15, 20, and now 25-year mark.

The theme for 25 years was "Better Together," to celebrate the school's diverse population.

As part of the project the school commissioned Olmsted to create the mural which incorporates a map with all of the countries in the world, the school's learning garden, the township's trees, and even a calming corner for students to take a break.

Throughout the painting project, students, parents, and staff were invited to help Olmsted in creating the mural.

"Working with the students and parents at Mt. Prospect was such an inspiring experience! It was a beautiful reminder of why I love what I do. Collaborating with such enthusiastic students and supportive parents brought the design and their community spirit to life — a perfect way to mark my 101st school mural," said Olmsted.

The project was funded through the Mount Prospect PTO and also parent donations. Parents who donated could have their name or their student's name painted somewhere on the mural.

"This artwork represents all of us — our shared values, our collaboration, and our pride in being part of the Mount Prospect family. It’s a beautiful symbol of what we can achieve when we work and dream together," said Hozeny.

The mural is expected to expand in 2026 when Hozeny said Olmsted will return for the second phase of creation — one that will showcase what it means to have Panther PRIDE: Positivity, Respect, Integrity, Determination, and Empathy.

"Our new mural is a stunning celebration of our school’s 25th anniversary and the vibrant community that makes it so special," said Hozeny. "Mrs. Caren Olmsted’s creativity and leadership brought together our students, staff, and families in a truly collaborative project that reflects who we are — a growing garden of learners. We’re already looking forward to beginning the second installation in October 2026."
