BASKING RIDGE, NJ — A new ranking from U.S. News & World Report released on Tuesday breaks down where each elementary school ranks in Basking Ridge and New Jersey.
U.S. News researchers based the 2026 ranking of the nation’s best public elementary schools on publicly available data from the U.S. Department of Education. Elementary schools are considered K-6 in the analysis.

- #45 - Mount Prospect Elementary School
- The student population of Mount Prospect Elementary School is 530 and the school serves PK-5. At Mount Prospect Elementary School, 83 percent of students scored at or above the proficient level for math, and 80 percent scored at or above that level for reading. The student-teacher ratio is 9:1, which is better than that of the district. The student population is made up of 47 percent female students and 53 percent male students. There are 56 equivalent full-time teachers and 1 full-time school counselor.
- #74- Oak Street Elementary School
- The student population of Oak Street School is 419 and the school serves K-5. At Oak Street School, 78 percent of students scored at or above the proficient level for math, and 80% scored at or above that level for reading. The student-teacher ratio is 11:1, which is the same as that of the district. The student population is made up of 49 percent female students and 51 percent male students. The school enrolls 2 percent economically disadvantaged students. There are 39 equivalent full-time teachers and 1 full-time school counselor.
- #85 - Cedar Hill School
- The student population of Cedar Hill School is 572 and the school serves K-5. At Cedar Hill School, 82 percent of students scored at or above the proficient level for math, and 74 percent scored at or above that level for reading. The student-teacher ratio is 13:1, which is worse than that of the district. The student population is made up of 48 percent female students and 52 percent male students. The school enrolls 4% economically disadvantaged students. There are 44 equivalent full-time teachers and 1 full-time school counselor.
The report includes about 47,000 public elementary schools ranked at the state and district levels based on publicly available data from the U.S. Department of Education.
For district-level rankings, at least two of the top-performing schools must rank in the top 75 percent of the overall elementary or middle school rankings to qualify for recognition.

"The 2026 Best Elementary and Middle Schools rankings highlight institutions that excel in fostering student achievement and providing exceptional learning environments for all," U.S. News said of the report.
The rankings methodology focuses on state assessments of students who were proficient or above proficient in mathematics and reading/language arts, while accounting for student background and achievement in core subjects. Student-teacher ratios are applied to break ties in the overall score.
