Five youths walking home from a basketball game at Belleville High School Friday night were robbed at gunpoint, Belleville police said today.
The five boys, who range in age from 14 to 16, were walking south on the 300 block of Union Avenue at 10:11 pm on Dec. 17 when they encountered three other youths walking in the opposite direction, Lt. James Giuliano said. Two of the three assailants, described as black males around 16 or 17 years old and wearing dark clothing, pulled out handguns and told the victims they would shoot if they attempted to run.
The assailants reached into the victims' pockets and stole two cell phones worth $215, Giuliano said. One of the attackers punched one of the victims in the ear before the three fled the scene, running south on Union Avenue and then west on Joralemon Street, Giuliano said. None of the victims required medical attention.
Police are investigating the incident.
