NUTLEY, NJ — Demolition will be kicking off soon at 35 Evergreen Avenue, the first step towards building a new housing development on the property, Nutley officials said Thursday.

The current structure – which is the former location of the Diamond Springs Pool Club – has fallen into disrepair and is in “derelict condition,” officials announced in a statement, adding that the demolition process needs to begin as early as possible.

That could take place “in the next few weeks,” Nutley officials said.

“The developer wants to get started clearing the land so that the redevelopment can begin,” Township Commissioner Tom Evans said.

Evans added that there are “significant safety issues at the site.”

Commissioner Joseph Scarpelli said that the property has become unsafe and is an eyesore in the neighborhood.

“Although the final site approval hasn’t come through, the developer is allowed to begin cleaning up the area,” Scarpelli said. “The sooner that happens the better for the township.”

The demolition is the first step towards the building of the new development, which includes 82 age-restricted units and three non-restricted studio units, officials said.
