First Cerebral Palsy Center Celebrates Valentine's Day in Style

Students Put on A Fashion Show Today, With an Assist from 'Elmo'

There may be more glamorous catwalks in the world, but few are likely to be as much sheer fun as the runway set up at the First Cerebral Palsy Center this Valentine's Day.

The Belleville facility, which serves students and adults with a range of cognitive and physical disorders, held its first annual fashion show this afternoon. Students ranging in age from grade-schoolers to teens donned their best outfits, promenading as pop tunes by Beyonce and Lady Gaga were piped in over loudspeakers.

The stage curtain was festooned with hearts and glitter in honor of the holiday.

The fashion show was followed by a dance as well as a visit by a special guest, the beloved character "Elmo" (aka Michael Perrone, a Belleville contractor who frequently does volunteer work at the center).

This is the first year for the show, which may become an annual event, said Pat Colligan, the center's executive director. The school serves 63 students from throughout the area, in addition to residential and other programs for adults overseen by the facility.

"[This year] they had their first show, which was sponsored by the student council," Colligan said. "I think we had 20-something participants and it's something we're looking to build up, and maybe get some sponsors for next year."

Colligan, who also said he "gets a great response from the community," also had high praise for the center's fashion models.

"These kids are the most courageous you're ever going to meet. You won't believe it until you come here and see those smiles."
