That’s the prediction from the National Weather Service (NWS), which is calling for a high of 90 degrees in the Belleville-Nutley area throughout the weekend.

“Extreme heat” – which some Essex County officials define as a period of high heat and humidity with temperatures above 90 degrees for at least two days – is no joke. It is responsible for the highest number of annual deaths among all weather-related hazards.

Saturday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after noon. Patchy fog before 9am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a high near 90. Heat index values as high as 97. South wind 5 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Saturday Night: A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 2am. Patchy fog after midnight. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 74. South wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm after midnight.

Sunday: Patchy fog before 9am. Otherwise, partly sunny, with a high near 90. Light and variable wind becoming west around 6 mph in the morning.

Sunday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 72.
