Nutley Officials Announce Hydrant Flushing for May

Hydrant flushing to go from May until September.

In an announcement released this week, the Nutley Public Safety Dept. advised residents hydrant flushing would resume on May 13 and continue until September 30.

At that time, firefighters will be out between 10 p.m. and midnight, seven days a week.

Two uniformed crews will go out  open hydrants until the water runs clear, usually 15-20 minutes. Nutley Public Safety officials said the procedure ensures a clean water supply to fire pumpers, cutting maintenance costs and lengthening pump life. They also said it ensures good operating conditions for the hydrants.

In the announcement, officials noted that occasionally the sediment and build-up being flushed can discolor the water in your home. Officials said that the water is not dangerous to your health but could stain laundry in your washing machine.

Running water taps should clear pipes after a few minutes.
