NUTLEY, NJ — A “true Irish gentleman” has passed away, leaving a hole in the hearts of the Nutley community: Thomas McEnery.

The Nutley Irish American Association offered a message of condolence for McEnery, its president, on Sunday:

“Please forgive us as we struggle to find the words to say about a man who dedicated so much time to his family, his community and our organization. Tom would do anything for anyone. He did so much for others and would accept no fanfare for it. He's the guy you'd mention in passing you had an issue, and without you'd knowing, he'd call anyone he could to try to help you out. He would never accept accolades or awards for himself, he would only accept if the award was for the organization. He didn't feel he should be honored for what he felt was the product of teamwork from the group.”

The association continued:

“A true Irish gentleman, Tom loved nothing more than his children, Sara, Tommy and Colleen. He was a family man, and wanted nothing more than the Nutley Irish and Nutley St. Patrick's Day parade to be for families to enjoy together. Our hearts go out to ‘his honey’ Colleen and his children as they try to navigate through their loss. Tom was a great father, brother, partner, leader and friend. Rest easy, Mr. President, we will try to make you proud, and know your Irish eyes will always be smiling down on us.”
