Trouble Paying Property Taxes In Nutley? NJ ‘Senior Freeze’ May Help

If you're a Nutley senior who is having trouble paying your property taxes, there may be a state program that can help, an official says.

NUTLEY, NJ — If you’re a Nutley senior who is having trouble paying your property taxes, there may be a state program that can help, a local official says.

On Wednesday, Township of Nutley Revenue and Finance Commissioner Thomas Evans announced that the state of New Jersey will begin mailing 2022 PTR-2 applications this month to existing applicants who have met the eligibility requirements for the 2022 Senior Freeze Property Tax Reimbursement. These are personalized applications and are not available on the state website, he said.

The Senior Freeze Program reimburses eligible senior citizens and disabled persons for property tax or mobile home park site fee increases on their principal residence (main home). To qualify, residents must meet all the eligibility requirements for each year from the base year through the application year. Learn more here.

“This has been an invaluable program for seniors, and for many, it has helped them stay in their homes in this environment of ever-increasing costs,” Evans said.

“All taxpayers who are currently in the Senior Freeze Program should make sure to file on time and have your application certified by the tax collector – especially if your properties have changed as a result of the latest revaluation of your home,” Evans added.

Evans shared the following information about the program:

"For applicants who are filing for a reimbursement the first time (or who filed an application the previous year that the state denied because the applicant did not meet all the eligibility requirements), they can print a complete packet (PTR-1) directly from nj.gov/taxation. If you do not have access to a computer or printer, copies are available in both the tax collector and tax assessor’s offices. (Please note the bottom portion of form PTR-2A and PTR-1A must be filled out by Rosemarie Berry, Tax Collector. You may drop off your form or mail with a self-addressed envelope to 1 Kennedy Drive, Nutley NJ 07110)."

The deadline for 2022 applications is October 31, 2023.
