Bernards Blanks Dayton in Season-Opener

Mountaineers jump out early and cruise to victory.

By Liz Alterman

The Bernards High Mountaineers jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the football team's season opener against Jonathan Dayton High School.

The lead never shrank even by a bit, and the Mountaineers ended up starting their 2013 fall season with a 33-0 shutout victory.

Bernards scored early on and never let up. At the half, the Mountaineers led 27-0.

But even a shutout on opening day couldn't dampen the spirits of Bulldogs fans as they watched Jonathan Dayton High School's football team battle conduct their first game on the school's new synthetic turf field.

Despite the loss, spectators were all smiles when it came to talking about the school's new home turf.

The contest, originally scheduled for Thursday, had been postponed due to thunder and lightning that sent the team home without a chance to play.

But blue skies provided the perfect canopy for Dayton's unveiling of its new synthetic turf field while it was still afternoon at that team's home field in Springfield.

Thursday's storm postponed a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new field as well as the game. Fans who went home disappointed on returned Friday afternoon to cheer for the Bulldogs — or the Bernards Mountaineers, as the case may be.

The second scheduled Mountaineers varsity football game game, at David Brearley High School in Kenilworth, also is an away game, according to the schedule on the Somerset Hills website.
