Bernards Beats Gov. Livingston, Helps Shelter

Rescheduled game played Saturday night also was fundraiser for American Red Cross, hosting the shelter in Bernardsville.

The Bernards High School Mountaineers football kept the team's unblemished 8-0 record on Saturday night with a 42-21 win over Governor Livingston High School from Berkeley Heights.

The game, rescheduled from the previous week due to Hurricane Sandy, was played at New Providence High School. It also was a fundraiser for the American Red Cross, the organization that together with Bernardsville emergency workers and volunteers has been hosting the only area shelter for those seeking daytime or overnight refuge from Sandy's impact.

Mountaineers scorekeeper Eric Simoneau said the Mountaineers posted another solid performance on Saturday, once again led by the passing combination of quarterback Devin Ray and wide receiver John Maddaluna.

Head Coach Jon Simoneau said he heard that gate proceeds from the game reportedly had raised a little more than $1,000.

Next game will be first round of state playoffs

The Mountaineers next game is scheduled for 7 p.m. this Friday at Bernards High School, a first-round state playoff game against Lenape Valley High School. Simoneau said Lenape Valley will be a formidable opponent, with a current 8-1 record, having won at least 8 games every season since 2009.
