Bernardsville to Discuss Turf Field Funding, Wall of Honor Deadline Approaches

Take advantage of summer activities while you still can.

The Bernardsville Borough Council has more than one idea in mind for how to fund a proposed synthetic turf field at the municipally-owned Upper Polo Grounds, and the subject is due to come up again at Monday's Borough Council meeting at 7 p.m.

Monday's agenda includes a final reading of a plan to appropriate $1.2 million for the plan.

There also have been continued discussions about whether to use funds built up in the borough's open space trust fund to pay for the project.

However, there is an open space plan recently finished and submitted to the borough planning board. That plan identifies specific properties in town that could add to the borough's open space holdings, connecting some of the properties, pointed out members of the environmental commission, and others.

On Monday, the Borough Council could present a proposed referendum for this November to ask voters if the money should come from the open space fund. The turf field, if built, would be installed over an existing grass field at the borough-owned property off Seney Drive.

"I am not in favor of raiding the open space acquisition fund, but I understand there are different feelings," Rosalie Ballantine, a member of the borough Environmental Commission, said last month.

Voters turned down a non-binding referendum last November to fund and build the turf field at the Upper Polo grounds. However, other proposals for fields presented this year also have met with disapproval by some members of the public.

Meanwhile, the Planning Board meeting scheduled for this Thursday in Bernardsville has been canceled.

And Bernardsville Pool members received another little reminder this week that summer is drawing to a close. As of this week, the pool's regular hours will end at 7:30 p.m., instead of 8 p.m., as previously.

Bernards High Wall of Honor Nominations Approaching

And this Thursday's deadline on Aug. 15 is approaching for nominees for the Wall of Honor that Bernards High School is planning for later this year to highlight the achievements of graduates and others who have contributed toward the school during its 100-plus years of history.

The nominating committee for the Wall of Honor, planned near the community room of the high school, has received the names of a good number of "very deserving" nominees, Bernards High Principal Scott Neigel said last week.

The nomination form is online on the Somerset Hills School District website. The nomination form also can be printed out from online and submitted to the high school.

Over in Bedminster, the Open Space/Farmland Advisory Committee Meeting has a meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the municipal building at 1 Miller Lane.

The Bedminster Historic Preservation Commission also has a meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. on Thursday at the Bedminster municipal building.
