Bernardsville Voting Goes Smoothly at Bernards High

Bernardsville voting districts all at Bernards High School, which remains closed after Sandy.

Despite uncontested local elections and persisting power outages in the borough, many Bernardsville voters apparently managed to get to cast ballots at which remains closed for students but was open for all voting districts.

At the polls shortly before 5 p.m., poll workers said that turnout seemed busy, especially considering that most residents still are dealing with the impact of the previous week's hurricane.

Nevertheless, they said that the overheard conversations that day were more about power outages and generators than politics.

At the local level, Republicans Michael DePoortere and Jeffrey DeLeo are running without opposition, after winning the June primary election against incumbents Charlotte Foster and John McCrossan.

Borough Clerk Sandra Jones said at about 5 p.m. that she had been at the polls a few hours earlier. "It seemed like a lot of people were moving through," she said.

Jones said that a turnout of roughly 60 percent is average for a U.S. presidential election year in Bernardsville. The borough has 5,673 registered voters, she said.

Lauriann Swabda is running unopposed as a Bernardsville representative for the Somerset Hills Regional Board of Education.
