Donations To Be Accepted Starting Sat. for 'Grandmother' of All Rummage Sales

The giant sale has been going on in some way, shape or form since early 1900s.

It's time to start clearing out your closets, basement and to pack up other unwanted belongings to make room in your house this fall — that is, room to bring home other treasures from the semi-annual fall giant rummage sale that benefits the Visiting Nurse Association of Somerset Hills on a long weekend in early October.

Starting on Saturday, VNA volunteers will be standing by at the Far Hills Fairground to accept donations for the fall rummage sale.

The donation period will be held on Mondays through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., between Sept. 7 to 25 at the fairgrounds, located at Route 202 (Peapack Road) in Far Hills.

The sale accepts — and then, through the efforts of hundreds of volunteers — sorts and prices a huge variety of clothing, household merchandise, sporting goods, toys and other items sold to benefit those being served by the Visiting Nurse Association.

A complete list of acceptable and unacceptable items is available at http://www.visitingnurse.org/news-and-events/rummage.

Proceeds from the volunteer-run sale will provide health care, hospice and wellness services to community members and their families without adequate insurance or financial resources. In addition, dollars raised will help enable the VNA to offer essential wellness services not covered by any insurance.

The long-running sale — held in some form for about nine decades — has been called the mother of all garage sales in New Jersey — but by now, it's more like a beloved and familiar grandmother.

Sales are orchestrated and open to the public with free parking each spring and fall. For information on volunteering, call the VNA at 908-781-6445.
