Regional Shelter at Bernards High, Bernardsville Updates

Bernards High School at 25 Olcott Ave. has been designated as the borough's shelter for those seeking a place to go after Sandy.

At about 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Bernardsville Mayor Lee Honecker said the high school is functioning as a regional shelter, run by local coordinators as well as the American Red Cross.

He said about 20 to 25 people were at the shelter, which would remain open as long as needed for residents in and around Bernardsville. He said people were making reservations for showers.

Honecker said people can recharge batteries there and at the Bernardsville Library, which will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. as a place to go during the day.

The library also has a childrens' room set up with puzzles and Halloween crafts, said one of the childrens librarians, Felicia Ballard.

Water stations will be set up

Honecker said stations with potable water are being planned, with one location at the library and others being considered.

He said no borough residents were injured in the storm, but one man was hurt trying to clear a tree from his property.
