Sign Up Wednesday for Summer Reading Program Grand Finale

Yoga classes held Wednesday at Clarence Dillon library.

Some 405 readers who have collectively read about 3,100 books in the Bernardsville Public Library's Summer Reading Program now should start signing up for the program's grand finale — a big party with ice cream donated by Penguin Ice Cream of Bernardsville.

The party, scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday, also is being sponsored by the Friends of the Bernardsville Library.

Attendance at the ice cream party is free, but advance registration is required at www.bernardsvillelibrary.org. Follow the link under Kids, or call the library at 908-766-0118 to sign up. The library is at 1 Anderson Hill Road.

Signed up readers looking to meet reading goals for the program

As this year's Bernardsville library's summer reading program, "Dig Into Reading," draws to an end, children are feverishly reading to meet their goals of 5, 10, 20, 50 books and entering them onto the online reading tracker.

This year, 405 readers registered for the summer reading program — 42 of them teens — and as of early this week, those readers had read 3,095 books. Throughout the summer, the Youth Services Department ran story times and craft programs related to the Dig Into Reading theme.

"People may wonder what the children are reading," said Youth Services Librarian Lia Carruthers. "In addition to the schools’ required and suggested reading, our readers are reading the "Otis" books by Loren Long, the "Infinity Ring" series, "Icky Ricky," by Michael Rex, "Dragonbreath" by Ursula Vernon, everything by Mo Willems, Dan Gutman’s "Genius Files" series, the "Keepers of the School" books by Andrew Clements, National Geographic Readers, the "Fly Guy" books by Tedd Arnold, and much more, she said.

“Our teens are reading the "Theodore Boone" books by John Grisham, "Mickey Bolitar" books by Harlan Coben, "Maximum Ride" books by James Patterson, "Iron Fey" books by Julie Kawagawa, "Gossip Girl" books by Cecily Von Ziegesar, and more," she said. "The list goes on and on."

Carruthers invites families to stop by Bernardsville Library, and the Youth Services staff will be happy to suggest books appropriate to their children's ages, reading levels and personal interests.
