Bloomfield Braces For Stormy Weather: Floods, Schools, Parking

Batten down the hatches in Bloomfield – some ugly weather is headed your way, forecasters say.

BLOOMFIELD, NJ — Bloomfield public safety officials are advising residents to batten down the hatches and watch where they park their cars amid weather forecasts of a severe storm.

Gov. Phil Murphy has declared a state of emergency in the Garden State ahead of a winter storm system set to bring up to four inches of rain, flooding and wind gusts up to 65 mph that could down trees and cause power outages. Read More: Murphy Declares NJ State Of Emergency Ahead Of Tuesday Storm

The state of emergency goes into effect across New Jersey at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Bloomfield Public School District said that all afterschool activities are canceled for Tuesday. The YMCA has also encouraged all parents to pick up their children by 4:30 p.m., administrators noted.

Bloomfield township officials released the following update about local storm preparations on Tuesday:

“Due to expected heavy rains and potential flash flooding for Tuesday, January 9, we will be monitoring flood areas, especially in the previously affected areas of town. With rivers and streams already at high levels, we expect this to be an issue. We ask that residents plan for and monitor their homes during this period. Please consider moving your cars to higher elevation areas. School lots will be available from Tuesday starting at 5 p.m. until Wednesday at 7 a.m. We also ask residents to report street flooding to our non-emergency number, 973-680-4141, or for all other emergencies, call 9-1-1.”
