BLOOMFIELD, NJ — Want to try your own hand at growing Bloomfield’s newly named “town flower?”

The Bloomfield Beautification Committee will host a plant/seed giveaway event at the Bloomfield Public Library courtyard from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 20. It will include Black-Eyed Susan seeds and seedlings – while supplies last.

Bloomfield town officials recently held a contest for local residents to name a “town flower.” Residents were given four choices: the Black-Eyed Susan, the cardinal flower, the phlox and the New York Aster. Each flower was vetted by the Bloomfield Beautification Committee for ease of growth and care, and all are native and perennial plants. The plants are also known to attract important pollinators like bees and butterflies.

The Black-Eyed Susan emerged victorious. The flower – which has striking yellow petals and a dark center – was officially crowned as the winner via a proclamation at the Bloomfield Town Council meeting in April.
