A Bloomfield firefighter also sustained injuries and was transported to the hospital for evaluation and care, authorities said.
The house was severely damaged, and the residents have been displaced, officials said.
While Bloomfield crews were working at the scene, fire departments from East Orange, Montclair and Clifton provided mutual aid house coverage, standing by to assist for other emergencies in town.
Bloomfield Fire Department Chief Lou Venezia said that the firefighters at the scene helped to prevent “an even greater tragedy.”
“We are keeping the injured residents in our thoughts and wishing them a full and speedy recovery,” Venezia said.
Bloomfield Mayor Jenny Mundell said the town’s department of human services is stepping in to assist the displaced residents.
“My heart goes out to the family affected by the fire, especially those who were injured,” Mundell said. “I’m relieved to hear they’re receiving the care they need and hopeful for their full recovery.”
“I encourage our community to do what it does best to come together to support, whether through Fairview School’s collection or via donation to Neighbor to Neighbor Network,” Mundell added.
