Independent Candidate Jumps Into Bloomfield Mayor Race: 2025 Election

BLOOMFIELD, NJ — A longtime community organizer is running as an independent candidate in Bloomfield’s 2025 mayor race.

Joan Hussey has thrown her hat into the ring for the town’s mayoral election, which will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 4. Learn more about her campaign platform here.

Hussey – an elected Democrat District Leader in Ward 1 District 9 – is challenging incumbent mayor Jenny Mundell, who ran uncontested for the Democratic Party nomination in the June primary election. No Republicans filed to run in the primary race for Bloomfield mayor.

“Voters are sick and tired of uncompetitive election after uncompetitive election – they are not healthy for democracy in Essex County or New Jersey,” Hussey said.

If elected, Hussey said she will call for an independent audit of all township contracts. Other spokes in her campaign platform include “bringing affordability to renters and homeowners” and “adding professional urban planning,” as well as tackling three perennial hot-button issues in Bloomfield: taxes, traffic and transit.

Hussey served as an advisor and organizer with former interim mayor Ted Gamble during the 2024 primary election. According to a news release, her other campaign experience includes:

  • Community Organizer for Input into New Build 224 Broad Street 2020-2023
  • Organized for the American Federation of Teachers and The New Jersey College Council 2003-2007
  • Volunteer Mikie Sherrill’s reelection in 2022
  • Elected Bloomfield Dem Committee member 2024
  • Volunteer Andy Kim’s campaign for US Senate in 2024
  • Volunteer Sue Altman’s campaign for New Jersey District 7 in 2024
  • Volunteer for the Fulop 4 NJ Governor Campaign as well as the local Bloomfield Democrats for Change 2025
